Revisiting Urban Gardens Workshop 2024

November 21st - November 22nd, 2024

New Jersey Institute of Technology

NewArk, New Jersey

This workshop was one of a series of workshops organized by the NSF City-as-Lab Research Coordination Network (RCN), revisiting the potential of community gardens and their impacts on human wellbeing, neighborhood resilience, and how these benefits can be leveraged.

The two-day workshop brought together more than 50 participants, including researchers, practitioners, community leaders, government agencies, urban gardeners, faculty, and students from engineering, design, social sciences, and agriculture. Invited talks on urban garden sustainability, challenges across community gardens, and innovative technology for urban gardens and agriculture set the stage for collaborative roundtable discussions on how different urban garden stakeholders can work together. Through interactive discussions and collaborative hands-on design thinking, participants identified current needs and research gaps for key enabling technologies. Throughout the workshop, participants built deeper connections and explored funding opportunities.
